Rmiller says:
Using wireless technology to transmit electricity. Sure this is still in the realm of MIT graduate students, but before too long, battery life will no longer be a problem on many of our beloved appliances. Take a laptop, you would have one wireless card for you internet, and then another one that pickups the one for the power. Thus eliminating the need for a battery. Or cell phones, using the same antenna, just a different frequency. This I think is the most promising use of a technology other than its intended purpose.

this is actually possible, although not on the scale that you mentioned. there are table-top wireless chargers for cell phones and PDAs, among other things. the only problem is that they must be sitting on or near the table to charge. wireless energy has been around for a long time, though. when i was about eight years old, my dad helped me build a radio that functioned off of radio waves alone. it had terrible reception, but it didnt need any external source of power such as a battery or a power plug.

I like the idea and the BBC said pretty much the same thing…however that’s exactly what it’s been made for, so that has nothing to actually do with having the technology do something OTHER than it original purpose.

Actually, microwaves serve that purpose wonderfully, the only problem is that they also cause water molecules to vibrate so fast that enough friction is generated to cook things. So your cell phone might be charging from a satellite beaming down those waves, but your dog sleeping under that table where the phone charges is well done.
And you know what happens when you have a reflective surface in the microwave? Imagine those waves bouncing around in a moving vehicle…

I don’t see how you could get enough power to go a long enough distance to make it better than a power cord. Now if some how you could make an Infrared wireless Wii Remote Charger, that would be pretty sweet.
