Universal translator. Some sort of recording device that can take in any known major spoken language and spit out a reasonably accurate translation in another language. It would require a great amount of memory, but it must be possible.

The only problem we have is how far we are in speech recognition. A computer can only understand something when there aren’t background sounds.

If you know about language translation, you’d know that nothing short of full human intelligence and understanding of language would make this possible. As fans of anime and manga know, even human translators sometimes get stuck in impossible situations where there is just nothing you can say in one language that has the functional equivalent of a phrase in another.
