You will likely find that if you compare equivalent specifications and actually look at the laptops in a store that there are usually few significant differences among them at the various price points. Don’t be afraid to ask the staff for ther opinions. They should ask what you want to do with the computer-if you are in serious gamer a high performance (and more exopensive) machine is needed. If you are only surfing the net, e-mailing an word processing, a more basic (and cheaper) machine will do.

They nearly all have plastic cases and their internal parts are mostly made offshore if duarbility is an issue for you. You may want to actually try the keyboards to see if the action of the keys is different enough so that you prefer one over the others.

You may also want to research problem rates with each by typing in ‘laptop problems ___________” filling in the blank with a brand

You may ultimatley choose on the basis of looks. In the end, with most things being equal, it is a personal choice.

I prefer Toshiba’s.

I don’t think you will get a definitive answer on this as everyone has different experiences with laptops and it’s a matter of opinion.

People who have problems with a laptop will end up hating that make forever more.

We use Toshiba’s at work and I work on them on a daily basis, so I have found them be utterly reliable so far. I also own a Toshiba for my home use. Only had a problem with the battery thus far but that is to be expected, batteries don’t last forever.

Toshiba’s are better than Compaq or Acer,
but I personally would go with HP or Dell.

from my experience, Toshiba should be your last choice.
